A Palynotaxonomic Study of Some Malus species

Abstract
Pollen morphology, sculpturing, and structure are useful in taxonomic studies from the family to the cultivar level. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies on pollen morphology have been proven to be a useful plant-identifying tool for taxonomists and horticulturists. The objective of this study was conducted to observe pollen characters, and to investigate possibility of plant classification for the cnltivars. The results obtained were as follows.
Pollen grains were characteristically monad, sculpturing patterns were striate, and aperture were striate, and aperture were tricolporate.
Polar length and equatorial diameter ratio were prolate in `Jonathan¢¥, `Seogyeil¢¥ and `Fuji¢¥, were subprolate in `Deliciuos¢¥, `Jonagold¢¥, `Raps Janet¢¥ and `Hye¢¥, were prolate spheroidal in the `Golden Delicious¢¥ and `Wangryung¢¥.
All cultivars prove the pores inner striate in the 1/2,000.
`Jonagold¢¥, `Hye¢¥, and `Fuji¢¥ bring out medium character of parents cultivar in the between striate and `Seogyeil¢¥ bring out the same result in the width of striate. The pollen grain of `Wangryung¢¥ obtained from the cross `Golen Delicious¢¥ ¡¿ `Delicious¢¥ bring out the medium character of parent cultivar in the polar length. `Delicious¢¥ and `Golden Delicious¢¥ were similarity but were well distinguished in sculpturing pattern. Morphological and structural characteristics of pollen may serve as an aid in the taxonomic identification of cultivars in Malus domestics.
